From huge national accounting firms to local independent CPAs, this web page will give you helpful advice and information.

The accounting firms known as the "Big 6" are:

Your Current Accounting Firm/CPA
With tax filing always on peoples' minds, it might be time to review the work your accountant, accounting firm, or CPA has been doing for you. Is your CPA or accounting firm helping you save money? Is your business doing better based on advice from your accountant? Has your accounting firm suggested steps to improve your business? Your accounting firm or CPA may not still have your best interest at heart, even though they may have been working with you for many years.

Re-inspect that relationship. Look good and hard at what your accountant is doing for you. Perhaps you or your company have outgrown the services your current accountant provides. The larger you grow, the more involved your taxes become. There may be better options for you: other tax professionals may perform a wider range of services than you were even aware of. Look into it.

Some basic questions you should ask yourself in determining whether you need to begin to search for another accounting firm are:

  • Can you reach your accountant without a lot of phone tag? You should be able to contact them within 24-72 hours.
  • Has your accounting firm instructed you on which records to keep, how long to keep them, and the best way to store them? This will be invaluable to you in an audit.
  • Does your CPA stay up-to-date on the latest tax laws and inform you how they affect you?
  • Is your accountant offering you every opportunity to legally lower your tax bills and provide you with money-saving strategies?
  • Have you requested your accounting firm's peer review report? This review is normally done every three years by an outside accounting firm. If they have nothing to hide, they will gladly share this with you. If you get the runaround, that's not a good sign.
  • Is your accountant knowledgeable about your field and the size of your business?
  • Do you work with the same accounting staff or are you being shuffled from desk to desk?
  • Have you reviewed your accountant fees to see if you are being charged fairly? If their rates have risen, is their service improving in kind?
  • Where is your accounting firm ranked? In the top five accounting firms in your area? In the top 100 accounting firms?

Do you like the answers to these questions?  If not maybe you should start looking for a new CPA or accounting firm .
