CE Mark

CE mark, CE certification, and CE testing might sound like secret code to some, but to those who are searching for the CE symbol and CE marking information, they know exactly what it signifies. It is the quality and branding mark for products made or sold within the European Union. The letters "CE" are the abbreviation of the French phrase "Conformité Européene," which literally means "European Conformity". (Now don't you just feel smart all over?)

What is CE marking?
CE Marking is a mandatory mark for many of the products (around 70%) sold on the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and European Union (EU) markets (total 28 countries). The CE branding is often referred as the "Trade Passport to Europe" for non-EU products. The CE designation on a product is the manufacturer's claim that the product meets the requirements of all relevant European Directives.

EU legislations, e.g. EU directive concerning Liability for Defective Products, make EU importers liable for the products they import, including the machinery they provide to their employees for work. Many non-EU exporters are finding that no matter how interested a prospective EU importer may be in the product, the importer will NOT risk importing non-conforming products (i.e. the products without CE Marking) which, in case of accident, may generate legal action against them. The liability claims in a law suit can be as high as 70 millions EUROs.

CE marking on a product:

  • indicates to governments that the product can be legally sold within the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA),
  • ensures the product can move freely throughout the European Single Market,
  • indicates to customers that the product meets designated minimum safety standards and therefore a minimum level of quality,
  • promotes public health and safety,
  • enhances product credibility,
  • leads to improved sales and greater customer satisfaction.

CE marking is mandated by New Approach Directives. Many products are covered by these directives, and to be placed on the market in the EU, some must bear CE marking--it's a legal requirement.
